It is a Hindu explorer town on the banks of the stream Bhagirathi – the beginning of the waterway Ganges. The town is situated on the More prominent Himalayan Reach, at a level of 3,100 meters (10,200 ft). As per well known Hindu legend, Goddess Ganga descended here when Lord Shiva let the powerful waterway out of the locks of his hair.
Gangotri is one of the four sites in the Chota Dham Pilgrimage circuit. It is likewise the beginning of the Ganges stream and seat of the goddess Ganga. The stream is called Bhagirathi at the source and obtains the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The beginning of the heavenly waterway is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Ice sheet, and is a 19 km journey from Gangotri. The first Gangotri Sanctuary was worked by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa. The sanctuary is shut from Diwali day consistently and is returned on Akshaya Tritiya. During this time, the icon of the goddess is kept at Mukhba town, close to Harsil. Ceremonial obligations of the sanctuary are administered by the Semwal group of pujaris. These pujaris hail from Mukhba town.
