Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and has been mentioned as part of Kedarkhand in the Skanda Purana. In the days of the British it was known as Dehra.It is also known as Dronagiri as Acharya Drona lived here in the days of the Mahabharata.

Local folklore and stories connect these with the Ramayana. Baba Ram Rai, son of the seventh Sikh Guru Har Rai built a Gurudwara here in about 1707 which is now known as Guru Ram Rai darbar Sahib.
