Description

The Subir Raha Oil Museum in Dehradun, Uttarakhand is located within Tel Bhawan on the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) premises. Named after the ex-chairman and MD of ONGC, it was established to showcase the different stages of the oil and gas value chain. The museum also depicts the industrial history of petroleum in India as well as the process of conservation of fossil fuels. The museum is divided into sections so as to provide a comprehensive idea of the history and of the value chain.

The oil museum, which has 2 floors, has three sections. The first one has on display the history of oil; there are samples of crude oil along with a number of flow charts to explain their properties at different temperatures. The second section focuses on the process of exploration and subsequently the production of oil whereas the third section depicts the various methods of oil refinement and transportation. For a more immersive experience, there is an audio-visual room at the museum which provides visitors with an insight into India’s oil industry and also about the journey of the ONGC. Furthermore, there are several miniature working models showing the process of extracting oil from the earth and key tools like pipes and drill bits. There is a souvenir shop too.
